Bring on the fireworks! It’s time to celebrate our nation’s freedom. What better time for PulpFest to say thanks for all of the donations that we have received? They’re all for our members. The only requirement is to be at PulpFest 2023 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Pittsburgh – Cranberry between August 3 and August 6.

When you arrive at PulpFest 2023, one of the first things that you’ll see will be this year’s welcome banner. We want to thank Rick Akers and Heritage Auctions for sponsoring this year’s banner. You can thank Rick personally as he’ll be attending this year’s convention. And don’t forget about Heritage’s “Pulp Magazine Showcase Auctions” featuring The Jack and Joanie Kump Pulp Collection. Their hero pulp auction will take place on July 6 and 7.

We also want to thank Gordon Van Gelder and The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction — 74 years old this year — for sending PulpFest nearly 250 back issues. These will be handed out by our registration staff while supplies last. The award-winning magazine has been supporting PulpFest — and Pulpcon before it — for decades! We’re extremely grateful for the long-standing support of F&SF.

Dustin Wright and Chaosium Inc. — the publisher of Call of Cthulhu and other role-playing games — have been donating to PulpFest for many years. Chaosium has donated several horror and fantasy books that will serve as door prizes at this year’s convention, a fitting tribute to the centennial of Weird Tales. We’re also grateful to Curt Phillips, Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Meteor House, and Mike Chomko, Books for also helping with this year’s door prizes. We’ll be handing them out during our 2023 programming.

The fine folks of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc. have also sent us softcover copies of several books from their Edgar Rice Burroughs Universe™ line and popular Jane Porter® comic book series to serve as door prizes. Director of Publishing, Christopher Paul Carey, has also contributed a number of audiobooks inspired by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Many thanks to both Chris and ERB, Inc. for helping us celebrate this year’s ERBFest.

To help celebrate the centennials of Edgar Rice Burroughs’ The Moon Maid and the corporation he founded, Jim Gerlach of ERB Books has donated one of his fantastic collector’s editions to PulpFest 2023. We’ll be raffling off The Letterpress Edition of At the Earth’s Core at this year’s convention.

Authorized by and published under the imprint of ERB Inc. of Tarzana, California, the seventh title in the ERB Limited Edition Collection will be raffled off on Saturday evening, August 5, at 7:10 pm. Tickets will be available at the PulpFest 2023 registration desk for $5. You don’t need to be present at the drawing to win.

If you are not able to attend PulpFest 2023 but would like a chance to win a copy of At the Earth’s Coreyou can purchase a ticket online. Just click the PayPal button below or write to Jack Cullers at jack@pulpfest.com for additional details. Online tickets are $6. Buy as many tickets as you want for a chance to win a copy of At the Earth’s Core, a $300 value. This offer is only good for residents of the United States.

Also helping with our ERB salute, Phil Normand of Recoverings has donated a reconstructed first-edition dust jacket for Tarzan of the Apes. It’s lot #78 in our PulpFest auction. You can place your bid at the convention or online. Visit our auction page by clicking the auction button at the top of our homepage to learn more details or to place an online silent bid.

Many thanks to Jess Terrell and the For the Love of All Things Edgar Rice Burroughs Facebook group for their continuing sponsorship of pulpfest.com. It’s a tremendous way to help us with our celebration of the pulp writers, editors, publishers, and artists who continue to inspire contemporary creators of the world’s popular culture.

Also helping to sponsor pulpfest.com are ERB Books, Mike Chomko, Books, and ThePulp.Net, your link to the online world of pulp magazines since 1996!

We also want to thank the Pittsburgh area bookstores and comic shops that have helped to promote this summer’s pulp con. Special thanks to Steve Ericson of Books from the Crypt, Jeff Harper ProductionsMartin Grams, and Todd McDevitt of New Dimension Comics for their tremendous help.

A big shout-out to the Caliban Book Shop. They’ve been helping to promote PulpFest ever since the convention relocated to the Pittsburgh area. Located at 410 South Craig Street near the Carnegie Museums in Pittsburgh, Caliban Book Shop buys and sells used and rare books for readers and collectors. They’re particularly strong in vintage paperbacks, with a basement full of paperback fiction, mysteries, and science fiction, all priced way below retail. Visit their Instagram page for a peak at some of their pulpwood pickings, including their brand-new “Cowboy Corner.”

If you would like to register as a dealer at this year’s PulpFest, we’ve run out of tables. Please get in touch with Jack Cullers ASAP to be added to our waiting list. You can reach him at jassways@woh.rr.com or jack@pulpfest.com.

If you are not from the Pittsburgh area and have yet to book your room for this year’s PulpFest, you can book your room directly through the PulpFest website. At the top of our webpage, you’ll find a link that reads “Book a Room.” Click on this link and you’ll be redirected to a secure site where you can book a room at the DoubleTree. You can also reserve a room by calling 1-800-222-8733. Please be sure to mention PulpFest to receive the special rate. Currently, there are only a few rooms with king beds left at the convention rate. Click here for other options.

Thanks so much to everyone who has reserved a room at our host hotel. By staying at the DoubleTree, you’ve helped to ensure the convention’s success.

Our lead image is the July 1942 issue of Street & Smith’s Doc Savage. It features cover art by Charles DeFeo, whose flag image ran across the publisher’s line of pulp magazines as part of their “United We Stand” campaign. We’ll be celebrating Doc Savage and some of the other great pulp heroes of 1933 at this year’s PulpFest.

Whereas Street & Smith ran a solitary flag on the cover of their magazines, other publishers opted for a more subdued look, using a boxed flag with the “United We Stand” slogan on their pulps. Pictured above is Norman Saunders’ cover for the August 1942 issue of Ace Sports. At PulpFest 2023, we’ll be saluting the centennial of the sports pulp as part of our programming activities.

Our featured image is adapted from John Russell Fulton’s cover art for the February 1949 issue of Blue Book Magazine, published by the McCall Corporation. It was part of a 46-part series entitled “The United States” that featured the artwork of Fulton, Benton Clark, and Herbert Morton Stoops. The series began with the January 1947 number and ran almost continuously through the February 1951 issue. Fulton’s painting of the father of our country, George Washington, illustrated the state of Virginia.
